Records held by TNA, WO 78/4646, indicate that this Magazine was steadily expanded and strengthened over the years.  Plans from 1892 show that the Magazine had four main chambers with a similar layout to the present building.  The shifting lobby was to the east side and there was a lighting passage running the whole way round the chambers. The current dog kennels were the Examining Room, Lamp Room, Cooperage and another Shifting Lobby.

Notes indicate that the Magazine had work carried out on it between 1881 and 1889 which cost a total of £16.647, a substantial amount.

This magazine is said to be the “largest of its type” remaining anywhere in the world. It has been in a derelict state for decades although work has taken place to clear debris. The general layout consisting of four large magazine chambers surrounded by a two level lighting corridor. This would have provided light through windows along the walls whilst preventing any naked flame from oil lamps from getting near to the magazine’s gunpowder (Wikipedia)
