This is a WW2 Tunnel Entrance.  The Upper Cave had been used since Roman times, and during Victorian times was used as a Magazine.  In 1942 the Lower Cave was discovered during tunnel.  During World War 2 the caves were used for ammunition storage.  The rails used to transport the spoil out of the tunnel are still on site.
