SS29 Hardings Battery Gibraltar

Hardings Battery, also sometimes called Hardings Fort, was name after rgw Chief Engineer in Gibraltar.  It was constructed over the site of what had been the 7th Europa Battery.

Originally armed with 2 x 24 lbs

In 1863 this was upgraded to 2 x 32lbs.

 

In 1868 Colonel W.F.D. Jervois made a review of the fortifications of Gibraltar, and many other British Ports throughout the World, and made a number of recommendations in respect of new coastal batteries and defences. 

In 1877 work commenced on the New Harding Battery which was built to accommodate a 12.5 ins RML gun.  The shell and cartridge store are immediately below the gun, with the usual lighting passage.

 

The site was renovated in 2014 and is in excellent condition.  The 12.5 ins gun is the gun from Princes Alexandra’s Battery which lies just inside the Gibraltar Dockyard.

Another 12.5ins gun was mounted at Europa Hutment Battery, about a Kilometre to the west.
